Seoul Gazette - Abu Dhabi Travel Guide: Desert Safaris, Aquariums, and Local Markets

Abu Dhabi has emerged as an accessible new destination for travelers from Luxembourg, facilitated by the introduction of direct flight connections. The city offers a wide spectrum of activities ranging from high-adrenaline desert excursions to cultural immersion in traditional markets and modern aquatic attractions.

For visitors seeking outdoor adventure, the desert safari experience provides a stark contrast to the urban environment. Organized tours typically utilize Toyota Land Cruisers operated by local providers such as Desert Rose Tourism. These vehicles transport groups of four to six passengers to designated starting points approximately 75 minutes outside the city center. Before entering the dunes, drivers partially deflate the tires to optimize traction for off-road driving.

The core of the safari involves "dune bashing," a high-speed ride over sand dunes that lasts roughly 30 minutes. Following this activity, participants arrive at a walled desert camp equipped with seating areas featuring cushions and tables around a central stage. The camp offers a variety of leisure options, including camel rides, dune buggy rentals, and quad biking. More relaxed activities include henna tattooing, trying on traditional Emirati costumes, creating sand art in bottles, and viewing a small collection of deer and birds.

A notable feature of the camp is the opportunity to interact with falcons, a bird of prey significant to Emirati heritage. Visitors can have their photographs taken with the birds, which are often perched on stands covered in green artificial turf. The evening program includes buffet-style dinner service interspersed with three performances: traditional dance, belly dancing, and a fire display. A short presentation also highlights the historical role of camels in UAE culture.

For those preferring indoor attractions, the Abu Dhabi Aquarium provides an extensive look at global aquatic life. The facility allows visitors approximately 90 minutes to explore exhibits at a leisurely pace. The collection is organized by continent and environment, featuring sharks, piranhas, reef fish, horseshoe crabs, sea horses, sea dragons, and jellyfish. Moray eels are also prominently displayed.

Beyond marine life, the aquarium houses separate displays for amphibians, including dart frogs and giant bullfrogs, as well as reptiles such as tortoises, chameleons, geckos, bearded dragons, and various snakes. Mammals on display include capybaras, monkeys, nutrias, puffins, and African manatees. The exhibits are designed to be both educational and entertaining, offering a comprehensive tour of diverse ecosystems.

Cultural and culinary experiences are central to the Abu Dhabi visitor itinerary. The Fish Market operates in two phases: it opens at 05:00 for wholesalers and restaurants before opening to the public later in the day. The facility is noted for its high standards of hygiene, with separate cleaning stations for men and women allowing customers to take home filleted fish. Alternatively, visitors can purchase fresh catch from the market and have it prepared by one of the surrounding restaurants for immediate consumption.

The market offers a wide variety of locally caught species, including giant sole, red snapper, kingfish, parrotfish, shark, yellow-fin tuna, and mackerel. Crustaceans such as blue crabs, prawns, gambas, crayfish, squid, octopus, and cuttlefish are also available. Imported fish, such as Norwegian salmon, can be found alongside local produce.

Adjacent to the fish market is a date market that has evolved to include fruits and vegetables. The market features over 100 varieties of dates, with producers offering date syrup, date butter, and pickled dates. Stalls are arranged in rows, selling dates both loose for "pick and mix" selections and pre-packaged, sometimes stuffed with nuts.

Water-based activities are abundant due to Abu Dhabi's geography as a city built on islands. Options range from water taxis and slow boats serving Arabian coffee to party boats, kayaks, and jet skis. Speedboat tours, such as those operated by The Yellow Boats, offer 75-minute excursions around the bay and islands. These tours provide views of the Yas Marina Formula One circuit, the W Hotel, golf clubs, private beaches, mangroves, palaces, and other pleasure craft.

The accessibility of Abu Dhabi via direct flights from Luxembourg makes it a compelling short-haul destination. Visitors can explore major landmarks like the Yas Marina circuit on foot, by bike, or by car, or visit nearby entertainment centers such as Ferrari World. The combination of modern infrastructure, traditional culture, and natural attractions provides a diverse experience for first-time visitors.

For travelers considering a return, options include booking another stay in Abu Dhabi or utilizing Etihad Airways' stopover incentives to spend time in the city before continuing to other destinations within their network.
