Elon Musk Jokes About Space Relocation After Texas Senate Loss
Elon Musk Jokes About Space Relocation After Texas Senate Loss
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk took to social media to mock the outcome of the closely watched Texas Senate race, joking about relocating his businesses to space after Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton. The loss follows a historic spending spree in which Musk contributed $158 million to support Paxton’s campaign.
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk responded to the defeat of Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race by joking about relocating his operations off Earth. Following Democrat James Talarico’s victory, Musk posted on X that "data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now" and added, "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time."
The comments came after a historic expenditure cycle in which Musk contributed $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC based in Texas. Federal filings confirm the funds were transferred to support Paxton’s bid for the U.S. Senate seat.
Paxton ultimately lost to Talarico, who framed his win as a triumph of grassroots organizing over massive financial disparities. Speaking at an event in Austin, Talarico noted that 97% of his campaign’s donations came from individuals giving less than $100. He described facing "more than $300 million, more than any Senate campaign in American history," alongside negative advertising and digital disinformation.
"The billionaires who own the social media algorithms, who own the cable networks, who own the politicians on our screens, they want us at our throats," Talarico said. He argued that the real conflict in the country is not between political parties but between the wealthy elite and the general public. "Our unity is a threat to their wealth and their power," he stated.
Talarico’s campaign also highlighted the circulation of AI-generated advertisements, including one depicting him reading from a fictional "King James Talarico Bible" containing false quotes. He concluded his remarks by asserting that voters had sent a message that they would not be conquered by those who seek to divide them by party, race, or religion.
The Texas result was part of a broader shift in the U.S. midterm elections, where Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The party also flipped traditionally Republican states, including Kansas, South Carolina, and Ohio.
President Donald Trump appeared to concede defeat during an early morning appearance on Fox News, stating he had expected better results from Republican candidates. The midterms mark a significant phase in Trump’s presidency, as constitutional limits prohibit him from seeking a third term.
