Bessin: "The AfD stands for more and more direct democracy and of course does not want to abolish the party landscape!"
The AfD state chairwoman of Brandenburg, Birgit Bessin, commented as follows on the continuing smear campaign against the AfD and the presumably deliberate misrepresentation of the statement by AfD member Lars Hünich by ZDF (Second German Television) and BILD (Picture Newspaper):
"An outrageous spectacle is currently being presented by many media and old party representatives. The AfD by no means wants the abolition of parties, but it is high time that the entire population is given more opportunities to have a say within the framework of direct democracy based on the Swiss model; the hurdles for this must be significantly lowered. We have been campaigning for this for years!
Hidden party funding, for example via foundations, is getting completely out of hand. It now amounts to a multiple of the actual party funding, which is restricted by the constitutional court for good reason. All state party funding must be placed on a new legal basis and limited.
In our basic programme, we also call for the direct election of the Federal President by the people. We also believe it makes sense to limit the term of office of members of parliament to reduce their distance from the people, for example to four legislative periods and two for the Federal Chancellor. And party affiliation should not play a role in appointments to leading positions such as the Constitutional Court, the State Court of Auditors and other institutions." (R-Shoykhet--BTZ)
